Ship's Blog - Fishermen's Finest

Check out the latest news from our main Alaska Port, Dutch Harbor/Unalaska.

This week’s cover story talks of ‘Oil in them thar … seas’

There’s also a great deal of local/state news and of course the Police Blotter…

Thanks again to our neighbor on Haystack Hill for this great video of life in Dutch Harbor.

Each year in March, we head West to target Cod in the Aleutian Islands.

Cod, always a mainstay of Fishermen’s Finest year, is down to one directed fishing trip this year. It is a struggle to hang on to our Directed Cod Fishery, moving forward.

See the link below to see how we are working to keep access Codfish and pay special attention to the dissenting opinion of the 9th Circuit Court of appeals judge.

A corny saying on the waterfront, “in Cod we trust.”

F/V US Intrepid 100 miles from Dutch Harbor; headed to port with Trip #7, 2010

In case you haven’t noticed, it continues to be Winter in Alaska.

Thanks again to our neighbor Joealaska for this video of life in Dutch Harbor; Raven House is lit up and the trucks are at the City Dock for the American No.1 offload/repairs.

Here’s a picture of the F/V American No.1 operating as originally designed, as a combination Crab Catcher Processor and Trawler.

Note the deck load of crab pots, not to mention the weather – “not a very nice day at the office.”
